The importance of the infrared channel becomes clear when you think of it as the ‘defect layer’.

In another key difference to conventional methods, negatives or transparencies are scanned as 32-bit black and white or 64-bit colour RAW data - basically 16-bit channels for each colour or grayscale, with an additional 16-bit infrared (IR) channel captured by scanners that support this facility. These two scans are then merged to become the final enhanced image, which preserves image details lost during conventional scanning, especially in the shadows. This increases the scanner’s effective dynamic range by performing two scans of each frame, with different exposure times. The frame positions and information are stored, so that multiple operations can be performed on a single frame, or all the media on the scanner, without having to reposition or rescan.įor film material, which consist of multiple layers, SilverFast Ai Studio also offers a Multi-Exposure feature. Each frame is added as a separate ‘job’, stored in the software’s JobManager. A number of photos, transparencies or negatives can be placed on a scanner's flatbed or film holder together, with the multiple scan frames being automatically detected and batch scanned in sequence. SilverFast Ai Studio scores over regular scanning utilities right from the start. This takes just two mouse clicks to complete, and scanning can begin. High-quality IT8 targets by LaserSoft Imaging - transmissive as well as reflective - can be placed on the scanner to calibrate it for use with the software.

The Suite is actually two applications in one package - the professional scanner software SilverFast Ai Studio, and the imaging software SilverFast HDR Studio. That includes photos, slides, negatives, medium-format film, any type of colour film you care to mention - including Kodachrome - as well as all forms of black and white film.

The SilverFast Archive Suite from LaserSoft Imaging is a leader in the digitising and restoration of all types of analogue images. Wherever there is the need for scanning and restoration of archive or analogue material, you should instead consider a piece of software that’s been designed especially for pulling out every grain of content, as well as the optimisation, enhancement and colour-management of the ensuing digital image. But does it have to happen? Designed for digital conversion This is information that you can’t retrieve, no matter how much you manipulate the image in Photoshop. It’s even worse when the print or negative is damaged. However, simply digitising a photo or negative with the software of the scanner manufacturer that came with your scanner can lead to a loss of a lot of the richness and information contained in the paper or film, even if you scan at the highest setting. You will often encounter scratches on the negative, or folds, dirt and even rips, particularly on aged photos. Those prints, transparencies and negatives that capture the light of the past are precious, but time can degrade them, while careless handling over the years can put their very existence in peril. Of course there’s also the demands of archiving, a way to store and preserve the past that’s so important for applications as diverse as documentary film making to finding out a family history.

Having a scanner to hand means they can access and add a wealth of analogue resources for use in cutting edge projects, both physical and in the digital domain. Many graphic designers and illustrators view such film and prints as a versatile, essential part of their workflow. Professional photographers are still in love with the high dynamic range and resolution offered by photographic film and transparencies, and the richness of specialist photo papers. Print photographs, slides and analogue film negatives may seem a rare sight in these digital days, but there’s still a place for them in the creative workflow.
