No idea why they don't just go straight free to play. The ammount of times EA has given this away in one way or another since launch is also weird af. It doesn't hold up to that though either. There's no running around and pressing lock on to throw dodge balls in what is ultimately a slow paced 3rd person shooter. To me rocket league is all about fluid, precise control mixed with hitting the ball at the right angles like pool shots, it's all about the physics. It doesn't need successful alternate modes (and hoops and drop shot in RL are great anyway). Rocket League feels like playing a legitimate sport. If I was a fan of the game I wouldn't compare it to Rocket League as it won't be a favourable comparison imo.
Played it on Xbox with game pass when it came out. This variety, along with the core strength of the mechanics, makes Knockout City a game that you can keep coming back to. The studio has also toyed with other alternatives, like a Kill Confirmed-inspired event during Halloween where you had to collect candy. Where Psyonix has experimented with basketball, ice hockey, and even American football, the developer’s failed to find anything quite as entertaining as its core take on soccer.īut Velan Studios has done a much better job: the latest addition, Knockout Royale, is available for two weeks and sees eight players duking it out in a Battle Royale-style fiesta, which works astoundingly well. And to dwell on that Rocket League comparison for just a moment more, Knockout City does have an edge: its ever-evolving playlist of alternative modes.
